Initial Research

Here are some of my favourite animations, that were new to me, in the initial stage of broadening my animation knowledge.

Sleeper - Jordan Buckner
Like:
  • 3D animation used in stop-motion style
  • Grey colour scheme contrasts with pink light
  • Interesting camera angles
  • Interesting character appearance (white eyes, scruffy hair, facial expressions) - different appearance to general Disney/Pixar type characters
Don't Like:
  • Confusing plot line

Däwit - David Jansen

Like:
  • Lino/woodcut effect
  • Aesthetically-pleasing seaside backgrounds
Don't Like:
  • Plot is too fast moving (each stage of character's life is too brief)
  • Plot may be improved with some speech

Le Mans 1955 - Quentin Baillieux
Like:
  • Nice perspectives and 3D nature of the cars
  • Aesthetically-pleasing backgrounds, especially the colour schemes
  • Jumpy, slow movement works with blocky colours
  • Blurred scenery contrasted with detailed focus on the car driving through it
Don't Like:
  • Plot is too stretched out

Attraction - Emily Scaife
Like:
  • Experimental microscopic style - patterns flash within morphing plant shapes
  • Eerie music reacts to the imagery
  • Eye-catching colours on an ominous dark backdrop
Don't Like:
  • Title scene font doesn't fit with the animation

PolyFauna App - Universal Everything

Like:
  • Interaction with multiple environments and music from Thom Yorke's 'Tomorrow's Modern Boxes'
  • Barren, haunting landscapes
  • Bold colour choices (unnaturally luminous, yet are used to depict a natural landscape)
Don't Like:
  • All of the environments are sparse, no dense areas to explore
